Be a Chorister for the Day

Music (General)

10th November 2012 09:00 - 17:30

The Cathedral is hoping to find the next generation of choristers with a new-look audition process that offers girls and boys the chance to spend a full day as a chorister – including an opportunity to sing at the popular Evensong service.

The 'Chorister for the Day' experience is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 10, whether or not they have been in a choir before.

Stephen Mannings, Assistant Choral Director, said: “Girls and boys will have the chance to meet current choristers and ask them questions, get a real sense of the social side of being in the choir, and find out about the opportunities for travel and music education, all of which can come with being a choir member. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this experience will be to sing in the Cathedral alongside the current choristers and Lay Clerks (gentlemen of the choir) during Evensong that day. We hope this will make the audition process much less daunting, and ultimately, fun.”

Choristers are trained in skills such as voice production, sight reading and the theory of music, and they can also receive free tuition on a musical instrument.

The Liverpool Cathedral choir is made up of 24 boys and 24 girls and they perform at high profile and civic events at home and abroad. They have recently toured Poland, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, Japan, The Netherlands, Venice and Riga. This year the Girls’ Choir made an exchange visit to Cologne Cathedral, where they sang to celebrate 50 years since the twinning of Liverpool and Cologne. The Boys’ Choir and men will go on tour to Estonia this coming October half-term. The choir also regularly appears on BBC Radio 3.

Stephen added, “We hope that ‘Chorister for the Day’ will encourage children who have never even considered being part of our choir to at least come along and see if it is for them. It doesn’t matter if you have no experience – all we are looking for is potential and commitment.”

The day is completely free but please book your place in advance. Participants are also asked to bring a packed lunch.
