Special peal to mark 60th anniversary of Cathedral Bells

November 14

A team of Cathedral bell ringers attempted a full peal on November 17th to mark the 60th Anniversary of the opening of the bells. The peal is also being rung to congratulate the former Dean, Justin Welby, on his consecration as Bishop of Durham.

The ringing 5,042 changes of "Yorkshire Surprise Maximus" took around four-and-a-half hours of continuous ringing by the band of 12 ringers.

The peal marks the fact that on 17th November 1951, HRH Princess Elizabeth, on her return by ship from a Royal visit to Canada, commanded the new bells of the Cathedral  to be rung for the first time. Later the same day the bells were blessed, or "hallowed" at a special service by the Bishop of Liverpool, Dr Clifford Martin.
