Our catering partners, Couture, have announced an exciting deal with Liverpool Community College which will see the college’s catering students supply a whole range of breads and baked goods to sell in the Welsford and Mezzanine Café.

The idea was first suggested by Chenee Nicholls from the college who has been helping as one of the casual kitchen staff in the Welsford. “Chenee happened to mention that Liverpool City College has a bakery section that supplies goods” explains Catering Manager Neil Blackhurst “and as we are always on the lookout for high quality, locally sourced food I thought I’d pay them a visit.”

Neil’s trip to the College’s bakery proved to be fruitful. Impressed by the high standard of baked goods coming from the ovens of a team that already supplies to places such as the Titanic Hotel, Neil felt what they offered was of great quality fitting into to our homemade ethos.
“the tide has turned back in favour of baked goods, particularly thanks to Mary Berry and the Great British Bake Off” said Neil “and at the cathedral we feel that home produced, locally sourced is so much better and what out visitors want. This is ideal for us.”

The deal will see the college students supplying a range of breads, cookies and muffins as part of the menu for both the Welsford and our Mezzanine Café. And Neil says this isn’t a charitable act “Clearly it’s great to benefit students who are entering into the profession and give them a start” he says, “but I wouldn’t do this if the produce were not up to standard. What we have here is the best of both worlds – high quality homemade produce that I know our customers will love supplied in a way that is really helping our local community.”
