Liverpool Cathedral voted 'Britain's Best' religious building

18 September 2007

Liverpool Cathedral has been voted the third best attraction to visit in the UK. The national poll, which was held over a six month period in 2007 and attracted over 600,000 votes via web, red button, post, phone and SMS.

The award winning Cathedral received nearly 100,000 votes and managed to beat some of the ’s most famous destinations including world heritage site- Hadrian’s Wall, royal favorite–Buckingham Palace and king of the family fun day out - Alton Towers .  It came above other famous Cathedrals such as Westminster Abbey, York Minster and Lincoln Cathedral.  The poll was conducted as part of UK TV History channel’s ‘Britain ’s Best’ series hosted by Alan Titchmarsh.  Stonehenge came first and HMS Victory second.

Director of Hospitality, Eryl Parry said ‘We are delighted to have received such recognition from the general public whom we serve.  It is also a very good indicator not only of the feelings that such a building engenders but the welcome they receive.  For Liverpool , it is a further sign of its growing importance as a visitor destination – and the part that Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s 20th century masterpiece plays in it.’
