Honour for Professor Ian Tracey

29 April 2008

Ian Tracey, the Organist Titulaire at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, recently received a top church music award in a special service.  Other leading church musicians, including the well-known singer/songwriter Graham Kendrick, were also honoured by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). More than 500 church choristers from all over the region took part in the service on May 17th 2008.

The RSCM Celebration Day as it is known, was a musical feast with a wide range of choral music from Bach and Stanford, to Graham Kendrick and a special commission from the previous Liverpool Cathedral organist Noel Rawsthorne. As well as the massed ensemble of singers, both of the city’s cathedral choirs took part. Brian Kay, former King’s Singer and now a Vice President of the RSCM was the conductor.

The annual service, which is organised by the RSCM takes place in a different cathedral each time; Liverpool was chosen this year because of its role as the European Capital of Culture 2008.  Graham Kendrick and Ian Tracey (who played the organ for the service), were among several leading church musicians who were present to receive the Fellowship of the Royal School of Church Music (FRSCM). Others included, the choral conductor David Hill, and James Lancelot, Organist of Durham Cathedral. Other awards including associateships (ARSCM) and certificates of special service were awarded to a number of local church musicians.  Members of the public were present to take part in the service which created quite a spectacle for all who came
