Mission
Liverpool Cathedral’s expression of mission has always been both to offer worship and a place of prayer as creatively and imaginatively as possible and to engage with the wider world, tackling from a Christian perspective the issues of the moment.
One of the key mission statements of the Centenary Campaign is to place the Cathedral at the heart of the City’s cultural life, as it prepares for its 800th birthday in 2007 and European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Mission is the common theme running throughout all of the phases of the Development Campaign and we will continue to find ways of engaging with those wishing to embark on their spiritual journey.
We aim to make daily worship and the faith it expresses accessible to all, to make widely known and encourage the use of the building for spiritual reflection. We want to make this place open to everyone so that people can explore the relevance of Christian faith in this modern world.
Education
The completion of the Education Centre was an early success of the Centenary Fund. The injection of £50,000 towards the refurbishment of the Education Department has vastly improved the opportunities for the Cathedral to reach out to schools and to children. With a significant increase in the numbers of schools and pupils now participating in tours and workshops, the Education Department has increased its resources to cope with this welcome new level of activity.
One of our most notable achievements in 2006 was our own version of ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’, known locally as the Narnia Family Day. Attracting some 3,000 people from the Diocese and beyond, children and adults from pram to motorized scooters participated and enjoyed the many free activities available.
Please see EDUCATION page for details of upcoming activities available for children.
Atlantic Project
In partnership with Weston Spirit, the Atlantic Project provided innovative needs-led personal development and work-based training for 6 young disadvantaged people aged 18-20 years within the Merseyside area. This project aimed to remove the barriers which prevent young people accessing education, learning, training opportunities and future employment. This £150,000 project received financial support from Weston Spirit and other individuals and organisations. This project successfully achieved its aims and objectives, reaching a conclusion in August 2007.
Diocesan Links
We are striving to create stronger links and improve comunication and relationships with Parishes across the Diocese. In this way we hope to ensure that that the Cathedral may continue to respond to and meet the needs of the Parishes and that they may fully appreciate the Cathedral as a Mission Resource Centre. A further £150,000 per annum is needed to develop these Mission aims and objectives.
