FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
When can we visit?
The Cathedral is open to educational groups from 10am. You can visit all year, although there are obvious access restrictions on Sundays, Christmas, Easter and other festivals. The Cathedral is a living church – please telephone 0151 702 7203/7201 to check availability and what’s on in the Cathedral.
How do I Book?
All groups must book their visit so that we can help you plan. Please contact the Education Department on 0151 702 7203 to arrange a date.
1. Telephone the Education Department to check availability of day and time. Or download a provisional booking form and e-mail it to education@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk. We will notify you if your date and time is available and if it is not, we will offer alternatives.
2. A provisional date will be made for you and you will be sent a booking form to complete and send back.
3. Your booking is then confirmed when we send you a confirmation letter and itinerary for your visit.
At certain times of the year the Cathedral is very busy, so please book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
How much does a visit cost?
In order to fund the work of the Education Centre we do levy a small charge for school visits. Please contact us for current educational charges.
What about adults?
All accompanying adults are free and we require all educational groups to provide a ratio of at least 1 adult to 10 children (this does not apply to group of students 18+). No pupils are to be left unsupervised in any area at any time.
How do I pay?
Payment can be made in advance with the booking form or on the day. Please hand your cheque or cash to the Education Officer on arrival. Cheques can be made payable to ‘Liverpool Cathedral’. We will issue a receipt.
Can I make a preliminary visit?
To make a preliminary visit please telephone the Education Department and we will arrange a mutually convenient date.
What can we see and do?
Please see the visits and workshops page.
Where can we eat lunch?
We have 2 lunch rooms available. Each room can seat up to 28 and each group must be accompanied by 2 adults. Alternatively you may eat in the Well area (but please respect other visitors and dispose of rubbish in the bins provided) Please note: the seating for this area is on the steps. During the summer you may want to picnic on the Rankin porch or in St James Park.
Are toilets available?
There are public toilets located in the Cathedral. If you do not have a male member of staff to accompany the boys to the men’s toilets please take them to the ladies’ toilets – do not let children visit the toilet unaccompanied.
Where can the coach drop us off?
Please report to the Constables Security Lodge and they will advise you where to park.
What about disabled access?
Please inform us of any special needs your group may have that we can make your visit run as smoothly as possible. We have wheelchair access to many, but not all parts of the Cathedral.
Where do we go on arrival?
Come to the main entrance, where you will be met by one of the Education team. You will then be shown where you can leave your personal belongings.
Is there a shop?
The Cathedral shop sells a wide range of merchandize, books, teachers resources and pencils, erasers etc for children as well as gifts. We can arrange goodie bags if you do not want to take your group into the shop – please contact us for more details.
Do we need to bring anything with us?
Make sure that you have a copy of your booking confirmation form with you – it gives details of the facilities you have booked and the times they are booked for you. Make sure that all your group leaders have a copy of this form.
What is expected of teachers?
Ultimately your group is your responsibility. Our Education team work alongside teachers as facilitators for the visit. Please do not leave your group unattended at any time (regardless of age). You are responsible for the behaviour and discipline of your pupils.
Please aim to be punctual; if your group is delayed for more than 15 minutes then we will try to keep to your programme, but we may have other groups booked in too. Please contact the Education Department to let us know if you are going to be late so that your guide is aware of the situation.
In the case of an emergency evacuation you should follow the instructions of the Education staff. There are first aid kits in the Cathedral, but medical responsibility can not be assumed.
Can we do our own thing?
You still need to book a date for your visit. Guided groups have priority in the Cathedral over unguided groups. Also remember that you have access to more resources if you book a guide.
What about Risk Assessment?
You must carry out your own risk assessment; however you can download a copy of our Risk Assessment to help.
