Service Times
As well as serving its own congregation as a house of worship, the Cathedral plays a major part in civic and national life. It is the focal point for celebrations and dedications for the Church. Special services include Ordinations, Confirmation and Diocesan Occasions. The Cathedral also holds civic services, royal events, military services, thanksgivings and various university celebrations. The Cathedral also holds many services on behalf of the nation, where the public want a focal point to express their grief or celebration. In recent times services have been held for John Lennon and mark the Heysel and Hillsborough football disasters. A special memorial service was held in 1997 for the Princess of Wales.
The choir plays a key role in all these great occasions and has had the honour of singing for Her Majesty the Queen on three occasions, including the Royal Maundy in 2004. Apart from its music, the Cathedral is justly famous for its ceremonial and liturgical expertise and for staging complex, high profile civic events; in the words of Bishop Clifford Martin: “You have to go to Liverpool Cathedral if you want to see how to walk to the glory of God. Every procession is an act of worship".
Cathedral Services
From Lent 2008, the daily service patterns have been adjusted to better suit the visitor/congregations. The list below reflects these changes and will remain in the future unless circumstances require any further changes. Throughout term time the services are sung by the Cathedral Choir. During the holidays some of the services on Sundays are sung by visiting choirs and 'Said' at other times.
