     The Litany exhibition (1)
Exhibited by Fr Stephen Williams, vicar of St John's Church in Walton in the north of Liverpool, the intention of ‘The Litany’ is the exploration through mixed media of a series of images based on part of the Litany. The intention is to evoke a response, which will lead to an awakening of spiritual experience, a questioning of belief and pre-conceived ideas of the meaning of the litany. This will demonstrate to the browser that there are many ways of interpreting and viewing well-established and familiar sets of words. The images are intended to be open to interpretation by those viewing the work, which is why the images have no title, although there is a copy of the words for people to use as they view the artwork

This is a developing journey from dark negative images through to light and positive images from our world.

    He states:
"I want the audience to make up their own mind as to how they react and respond to the images they are presented with. One reaction from a member of our Chapter clergy was that certain Christians would object to images of Che Guevara, Oscar Wilde, Bishop Robinson, Charles Darwin, and Karl Marx etc. My reply was that I intend to evoke a reaction and response and hopefully raise questions and in some ways also question peoples' preconceived ideas and beliefs.

The installation is a personal spiritual journey and one which I have wanted to explore and develop for some time. I would like to make the work available to a wider audience, which is why I approached the cathedral for space to exhibit this installation.
My hope is that it will encourage reactions and questions from the viewer".

This installation is the culmination of four months work on study leave, which began in April and finished at the beginning of August this year.
It is approx 35 feet long, 5 feet high and 2.5 feet deep, and is funded jointly by grants from the Diocese, Ecclesiastical Insurance and from St. Boniface Trust.

St John’s description of the crucifixion is presented by Bach as a drama in which treachery, injustice, vindictiveness and mob-violence each play their part. The events narrated by the evangelist are interspersed with reflective responses from the soloists and chorus.

Lady ChapelAs part of the festivities to mark the centenary of worship in the Lady Chapel of Liverpool Cathedral the Renaissance Music Group’s next recital there will draw upon the splendour of William Byrd’s music for certain Holy Days and Seasons in the church year. It is fitting to link Byrd with these celebrations because the modern edition of his works was dedicated for use by ’the Cathedral Church in Liverpool‘.The Lady Chapel was first used for worship on the Feast of Peter and Paul in 1909 and Byrd’s motets for that Holy Day will be included together with those for Easter, Whitsun and All Saints Day. The Group will be joined by the Chester Viols performing works for Byrd’s favorite instrument and the programme will be framed within motets by two earlier Tudor composers.

Compline candlesYou are welcome to join us in Holy Week on Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday for this unique service of Compline, or ‘Prayers at the End of the Day’ which is deemed to be the final church service of the day in the Christian tradition.

Compline is a contemplative service or ‘Office’ that emphasizes spiritual peace.

The address each evening will be given by Dom Henry Wansborough of Ampleforth Abbey, North Yorkshire, originally a Benedictine monastery founded in the early 19C. (Dom Wansborough will also be guest preacher at the service of Evensong on Palm Sunday)

(For information - Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as Compline is the completion of the working day - in many Christian places of seclusion or retreat it is the custom to begin the "Great Silence" after Compline, during which the whole community, including guests, observe silence throughout the night until the morning service the next day).
