"Towards the Empty Tomb"
An Exhibition of paintings and drawings by Ghislaine Howard
Ghislaine Howard has just been named as a ‘Woman of the Year’ for her achievement as an artist and her contribution to society.
This exhibition of drawings and studies charts the development of her major painting The Empty Tomb which was created specifically for Liverpool Cathedral’s Capital of Culture celebrations.
The painting was inspired by the artist’s experience of walking the urban spaces between the two cathedrals, making studies of those places where rough sleepers had found temporary shelter –the blankets and cardboard boxes bearing the traces of their recent occupants.
The works show how various elements have combined to produce the final painting: The city doorways, elements of her own life and images of the Pietà, one of the greatest of which, by Ercole di Roberti, hangs in Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery. The final painting which measures 4’x8’is housed in an impressive steel reliquary, and has a stark and resonant power that fuses the spiritual with the humanitarian.
Ghislaine has work in many major collections including Manchester Art Gallery, the Whitworth Art Gallery and the Royal Collection. In February 2009 she will be showing a group of works entitled The 365 Series at Imperial War Museum North and The Stations of The Cross / The captive Figure will be at Exeter Cathedral March to April 2009

Exhibition of Elaine Brown Paintings
(Located in the Elizabeth Hoare Embroidery Gallery in the Tower Complex, it is included in admission price of the Tower and is open to view during Tower opening times - see Tower Experience Page for details of times)
Artist Elaine Brown exhibits a series of paintings specific to the embroidery collection in the Elizabeth Hoare Gallery.
Elaine Brown is a London based artist who has shown widely in this country and abroad - this is her first solo project in
Liverpool .
When visiting the city for the first time in 2006, whilst showing in the John Moores 24 painting exhibition at the
Walker
Gallery , Brown was introduced to the Elizabeth Hoare embroidery collection by Tracey Emin and Canon Toby Forward.
Often using lace and fabric as subjects in her work the artist was naturally attracted to the embroideries. Similarities abound between needlework and the artist's method of painting - the meditative repetition and process of doing and undoing. Symbolic objects are common in Brown's work and the Christian symbolism used in the imagery was bound to intrigue, but she found the portraits of angels particularly compelling. The depiction of ephemeral beings have featured in her recent paintings. Working from these interests Brown has produced a series of small oil paintings on aluminium and watercolours on paper specific to and exhibited alongside the embroideries.

Commissioned Artwork by Tracey Emin
Internationally acclaimed artist Tracey Emin brings an especially-commissioned neon work, For You, (approx 46 x 686cm) to the Well of the Cathedral for the period of the Liverpool Biennial. She says, 'The Church has always been a place, for me, for contemplation. I wanted to make something for Liverpool Cathedral about love and the sharing of love. Love is a feeling which we internalise; a feeling very hard to explain. I thought it would be nice for people to sit in the Cathedral and have a moment to contemplate the feelings of love, it's something which we just don't have enough time to think about and I hope this work creates this space in time.'
About Tracey Emin ...
Tracey Emin’s art is one of disclosure, using her life events as inspiration for works ranging from painting, drawing, video and installation, to photography, needlework and sculpture. Emin reveals her hopes, humiliations, failures and successes in candid work that is frequently both tragic and humorous.
Emin’s work has an immediacy and often sexually provocative attitude that firmly locates her within the tradition of feminist discourse. By re-appropriating conventional handicraft techniques – or ‘women’s work’ – for radical intentions, Emin’s work resonates with the feminist tenets of the ‘personal as political’. Her interest in the work of Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele particularly inform Emin’s paintings, monoprints and drawings, which explore complex personal states and ideas of self-representation through expressionist styles and themes.
Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963 and lives and works in London . She has exhibited internationally including solo and group exhibitions in Holland , , , and . In 1999 she was short listed for the Turner Prize at the Tate Gallery, London . She has had solo shows at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Haus der Kunst (Munich), Modern Art (Oxford) 2002, Art Gallery of New South Wales () 2003 and Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center ( Istanbul ) in 2004. In June 2007 Tracey Emin was made a Royal Academician and represented at the 52nd Venice Biennale, becoming only the second female artist to do so.

Renaissance Music Group - A Tudor Nativity
Of the cluster of composers in the England of Elizabeth I, William Byrd has pride of place. Uniquely in that Golden Age of religious music, he systematically fashioned music for a wide range of texts for use throughout the church year – the Gradualia of his mature years. It is from this splendid collection that the Renaissance Music Group has taken material to present the traditional Christmas Story – Prophecies of a Messiah to come, Gabriel’s message to Mary and her visit to her cousin, Jesus’ birth, Angels, Simeon holding Jesus in the temple, Allusion to visitors coming to see him – Byrd, with a little help, tells it all in tender, evocative and ever-inventive choruses and the Story fits within a frame of ebullient pieces Byrd wrote long before the Gradualia. The Group will be joined by the Chester Viols, a consort playing Byrd’s favourite instrument.
This Tudor Nativity will be performed in the beautiful Lady Chapel of Liverpool Cathedral on Sunday 14th December at 8pm, £8, concessions £5. Parking £3 near the Lady Chapel. For disabled access contact the Constable’s Lodge, 0151-702 7260.
