Artist Elaine Brown exhibits a series of paintings specific to the embroidery collection in the Elizabeth Hoare Gallery.

Elaine Brown is a London based artist who has shown widely in this country and abroad - this is her first solo project in Liverpool .

When visiting the city for the first time in 2006, whilst showing in the John Moores 24 painting exhibition at the Walker Gallery , Brown was introduced to the Elizabeth Hoare embroidery collection by Tracey Emin and Canon Toby Forward.

Often using lace and fabric as subjects in her work the artist was naturally attracted to the embroideries. Similarities abound  between needlework and the artist's method of painting - the meditative repetition and process of doing and undoing. Symbolic objects are common in  Brown's work and the Christian symbolism used in the imagery was bound to intrigue, but she found the portraits of angels particularly compelling. The depiction of ephemeral beings have featured in her recent paintings. Working from these interests Brown has produced a series of small oil paintings on aluminium and watercolours on paper specific to and exhibited alongside the embroideries.
