Liverpool Cathedral ‘paints a pretty picture’ in number 1 position!

26 February 2008

The Cathedral Church of Christ in LiverpoolOne in five visitors who took part in the Liverpool Walker Art Gallery poll chose the Cathedral, with 20% of the total vote, as their favourite structure shown on the artist’s ‘Liverpool Cityscape’ painting.  It was commissioned by National Museums Liverpool with Liverpool Culture Company and Phil and Alexis Redmond, and is still a ‘work in progress’ in the specially created studio at the William Brown Street gallery (available to view up to March 7 2008).  The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (RC) gained fourth place behind such icons as the Liver Buildings on the city’s famous waterfront and the grandeur of St George’s Hall in the heart of the city.

The Anglican Cathedral, which offers free access to the public, has enjoyed the benefits of the general upsurge in visitors to the city since the year of European Capital of Culture 2008 began along with the other major city buildings and attractions, and artist Ben Johnson said: “What’s been most evident from visitors’ responses is the enthusiasm and love felt for the city.”

Liverpool Cathedral, famed internationally for its architectural beauty and scale is considered a ‘must-see’ when in Liverpool and has a great deal to offer visitors and worshippers with recent new welfare and refreshment facilities coupled with a whole new visitor experience: ‘The Great Space’ Film and Audio Tour. The experience includes an amazing 9 minute film in the newly created state of the art theatre showing the birth and development of the cathedral and, as well as a series of interactive information stations at various locations. It also boasts a comprehensive audio tour in 5 European languages  - English, French, German, Italian and Polish as well as an excellent Children’s version in English and personal guided tours by the knowledgeable team of Guides. Further recent enhancements include a pioneering, fully BSL ‘signed’ and captioned, DVD tour for the deaf and hard of hearing using portable DVD technology, the first of its kind in any UK cathedral. All this on offer each day as well the famous views of the city from over 500’ above sea level from the incredible Vestey Tower and the tranquillity of a special ‘Sacred Space’.
