Liverpool Cathedral Wins Two Major Awards in 2008 - Large Visitor Attraction of the Year, plus the NW Multi-Faith Award (Marque of Excellence)
19 June 2009
In June 2009, Liverpool Cathedral was awarded the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year Award 2008 at the BT Convention Centre. Up against formidable entries (Tate Liverpool, National Museums and Galleries Liverpool, The Bluecoat and the Beatles Story), Liverpool Cathedral triumphed.
In presenting the award, the judges commented: “"This was an impressive entry with strong and well-organised supporting material. Liverpool Cathedral is a place that exceeds expectations."

Says Clive Jervis, Chair of the Cathedral’s Enterprise Board – “This represents a significant milestone in achieving recognition of our position as a major player in Tourism, not just on Merseyside but beyond. Everyone at the Cathedral will have played some part in securing this award but particular mention should be made of Eryl Parry, and all her team for being the front line in delivering the success of this external and professional judgment on the Cathedral's role and continuing involvement in the ever demanding field of attracting tourists/pilgrims to our glorious Cathedral and to Merseyside.

We are even more firmly on the tourist map for all the right reasons with a strong identity and developing business and leisure connections.”
Says Eryl Parry, Director of Enterprise “We are delighted to have won this award for the hard work the whole Cathedral company put into a rich and diverse events programme during Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture backed up with the significant development of visitor facilities and attractions and a warmth of service that drew more than half a million visits through the doors of this magnificent building. We will now proudly represent Liverpool in this important category at the North West Tourism Awards in September. ”
This is a huge honour for the Cathedral and reflects all the hard work put in by all members of staff who make the Cathedral a wonderful place to visit.

What is the Marque of Excellence?
This is an award which is supported by Lord Lloyd Webber, VisitBritain, the North West Development Agency and the tourist boards of the northwest. The award is given to sacred sites (Gurdwaras, Cathedrals, Parish churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Temples etc.) that show they are making good progress in hospitality and visitor welcome. Sites achieving the award receive a quality plaque to be displayed in a prominent place. The plaque is ‘on loan’ (permanent we hope) and could be withdrawn if the standard isn’t maintained or the annual membership isn’t renewed.
