Liverpool Cathedral launches Great Space BSL Tour - a pioneering move in the world of Cathedrals

17 January 2008

On Wednesday 30th January at 6.00pm in the Mezzanine Café in partnership with LA Productions and Colin McKeown Liverpool Cathedral launched a filmed, fully captioned, British Sign Language Tour of the Cathedral.  This brand new tour opens up a whole new vista of experience to those who are deaf or hard of hearing. It takes the BSL user on a new and exciting journey of discovery through the Cathedral at their own pace, allowing them to soak in the atmosphere and beauty of the captured space designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott as well as offering fresh insight into the history of this 20th century icon in the bustling city of Liverpool. It uses portable DVD player technology (several are available) and the sets are available for tours from the Cathedral bookshop. To help even further, souvenir copies of the DVD plus educational resource are available to purchase from the Cathedral Shop. What an unusual and exceptional gift to give to those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Hannah Lewis, Team leader for work among Deaf people in Liverpool dicoese, and a Deaf BSl user herself says "this is really exciting - I've never been anywhere that has a personal BSL tour like this before - it really brings the Cathedral to life for me".

Producer Colin McKeown says "this is singularly one of the most enterprising and important projects I'm associated with."

The support given by the Community Foundation for Merseyside and the Mersey Docks & Harbour Company 500 Fund to purchase the dvd players, is a gift to all those who will now be able to access one of the greatest buildings of the world, for which Liverpool Cathedral is very grateful.
