Thousands usher in 2008 at the Cathedral

02 January 2008

2008 was ushered in with a truly uplifting ecumenical celebration at the Cathedral.  Dean of Liverpool, Justin Welby and the Dean of the Metropolitan Cathedral Dean Tony O'Brien welcomed over 3,000 people before handing over to Love and Joy Gospel Choir who raised the roof with song and dance.  Reflective moments were led by Bishop of Liverpool James Jones and Roman Catholic Archbishop Patrick Kelly.  The crowd then gathered outside as midnight approached.  Radio Merseyside's Roger Philips was the master of cermonies in a beautifully lit Rankin Porch where the choir sang, candles were lit, Great George rang out then the sky was filled with fireworks and a 40 foot 2008 spelt out in fire.

The crowd was made up of so many different ages and backgrounds, it really did feel like the city had gathered in this very special place to mark the beginning of a momentous year.  We continue to pray for all those leading this year's celebrations as European Capital of Culture and that the full potential of this award can be realised not only for the current people of this city, but that we leave a legacy for all those to come after us.  As we started the service, we must continue to recognise the significance of Liverpoool's motto: 'Deus nobis haec otia fecit' - God has given us all of this.
