The choir was formed in September 2015 in order to bridge the gap between children leaving either the cathedral choir or junior choir and potentially returning as an adult singer. There are around 25-30 members in the choir at any one time.

When do we rehearse?

Our Youth Choir rehearses on Wednesdays during term time from 6.30-7.30pm in the music department.

Is there an audition?

Yes, there is an audition for this choir. All members must be able to read music to at least an intermediate standard. There is a high turnaround of new music and sometimes not a great deal of time in which to learn it, so existing sight-reading skills are important.

Where does the choir perform and what music does it sing?

Our Youth Choir gives around 8 performances a year. These include 3 or 4 choral evesong or eucharisticic services in either the cathedral or local churches. The choir will usually give 2 large-scale Christmas performances, which include the ECHO carol service. Our Youth Choir also has experience performing at totally different events. For example, the choir performed on stage with Barry Manilow at his recent tour at the ECHO arena and sang at a secular community-based concert at the cathedral. So, although the music the choir sings is largely sacred-based, we do learn non-religous, contemporary works as well.

Is there a cost to join?

No. Our Youth Choir is free to join.

How do i apply to join?

Applicants for the choir need to be 14 years +, so at least in school year 9. You'll need to arrange to come in for an audition with the choir director. If you're under 18 you'll need to bring a parent or guardian with you to the audition and they must be able to give their consent to you potentially joining the choir.
