Arts and Culture Volunteer for the Manger

Role responsible to the Fundraising & Events Departments

From the 1st to the 8th of December, Liverpool Cathedral will host a large-scale Son et Lumiere, the Manger, a spectacular light and sound show by Luxmuralis.

Role Summary:

This is a short-term volunteering opportunity to support a unique and inspiring installation, operating to a shift pattern of up to five hours a day. As an Arts and Culture Volunteer you will support front of house, ensuring all visitors to the Cathedral have a safe and enjoyable experience during the Manger.

We welcome volunteers with a passion for arts and culture, great communication and team skills.

When:

  • You may be asked to attend a mandatory Health and Safety briefing and a familiarisation day TBC.
  •  You’ll be able to commit to a minimum of two five hours shifts to cover from 4pm until 9pm
  •  You’ll be available to volunteer in the evenings between the 1st to the 8th of December.


What’s involved?

  •  To answer questions from the public about our building and temporary artworks.
  •  To give directions to visitors.
  • Provide specialist assistance to those with accessibility issues.
  • To follow any instructions given to them by the Duty Management team.
  • To work in compliance with the Cathedrals Polices on Safeguarding and Health and Safety.
  • Attend any briefings or, training required for the role.

Cathedral Constable

An opportunity has arisen for Cathedral Constable at Liverpool Cathedral. You will report directly to the Senior Constable/Sergeant and work with the Constable team. You will work 48 hours over 8 days on a rota to provide a first class 24/7 security service for the Cathedral and its surrounding buildings. You will encounter many people who visit, worship, volunteer and work at the Cathedral and you will be expected to be a great ambassador.

Desirable requirements

Previous experience of working within the armed forces, police or security industry
Experience of working within a community environment

Sub-Organist

The Sub-Organist is a vital part of a small team of excellent organists working within the music department. This role involves providing organ accompaniment for the cathedral choir for evensongs, eucharists and other special services.

This is a part-time, permanent position. In addition to the hours stated, it is expected that the post-holder would attend termly staff meetings.

Organ Scholar

Applications are sought for the post of Organ Scholar, which is ideal for an outstanding undergraduate student, or a postgraduate student taking a year out, as its status is seen by the cathedral to be commensurate with that of Second Assistant. However, all applications will be considered equally.

The appointment is from September 2024 to August 2025 with the option of a further year if progress is satisfactory

There is shared accommodation provided for choral scholars and the organ scholar in Cathedral Close. This is free, although a small monthly contribution to the bills is paid by the residents.

The position will be particularly attractive to candidates considering a portfolio career, including some work in schools as part of the cathedral’s extensive outreach programme. In addition, it is expected that the Organ Scholar will help with the training and accompaniment of the cathedrals’ supplementary choirs

Liverpool Cathedral Visitor Survey Volunteer

This role is to support the Fundraising Department with Visitor feedback.

This role may suit you if you are cheerful, outgoing and love to chat as your chief responsibilities will be to engage with visitors and record their experiences of Liverpool Cathedral using a tablet computer

You’ll receive training in Visitor Survey fieldwork and you will comply with the Cathedral’s Health and Safety policies and procedures.

When:

The role is very flexible, and volunteers can select the shifts that suit them best within the seven days a week the Cathedral is open. You will need to be able to commit to a minimum of one two-hour shift and to be available to volunteer throughout the year.

The skills you need

  • Excellent people skills.
  • Ability to use initiative and own judgment.
  • IT literacy desirable

  • Keen to help, but unable to commit to regular volunteering for long periods.
