It uses lunar imagery, moonlight, and a surround-soundscape by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones. Take a closer look at the moon’s surface created from detailed NASA imagery and reproduced on a 1:500,000 scale, which is lit up from within.
Our specially-curated Under the Moon programme of lunar-inspired events includes an Astrophysics’ lecture and discussion, moon-inspired classical music recitals, voyage-discovery theatre and planetary storytelling for all ages.
Join us Under the Moon and at the Pier Head, Albert Dock and Mann Island for a spectacular arts & entertainment programme as part of the Three Festivals Tall Ships Regatta 2018.

The Moon is our closest neighbour, but the cosmos stretches out beyond it to unimaginable distances. Come along for a tour of the universe, starting with the familiar sights of the moon and night sky, but heading out to the farthest reaches of space and time. Taking in stars, galaxies, black holes and more, you will also discover some of the mysteries of the universe that we have not yet solved, and how we going about searching for answers.
Andy is Professor of Astronomy Education and Engagement at Liverpool John Moores University and Director of the National Schools' Observatory.
Liverpool String Quartet Under the Moon

Formed in 2010, the Liverpool String Quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest standard. They regularly perform in Liverpool, in their residence at the Nordic Church, and have given concerts at other notable venues including Liverpool Philharmonic’s ‘The Music Room’, St George’s Hall and the Anglican Cathedral. They have also toured extensively, highlights include a tour of the Balearic Islands which included the opening concert at the Mahon Festival and many tours to Spain and Catalunya. The Quartet will be playing moon inspired music including Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nacht Music, Bach’s Air, on a G String and Handel’s Water Music.

Join researchers from the School of Arts, University of Liverpool under the moon for a series of short performances about early-modern fantastic voyages. In collaboration with the University of Liverpool Players, costumed actors will enliven historical documents written by Renaissance writers including Shakespeare. These dramatic readings of journeys involving exploration and moon topographies explore humankind’s curiosity about the unknown, and how our imaginations and aspirations shape our creative self-expression.
This programme is based on the research of Travel, Transculturality and Identity in England, c. 1550-1700 (TIDE), a major five-year project on English ideas of belonging and between-ness based at the University of Liverpool and funded by the European Research Council.

Piano Recital - Debussy Under the Moon by William Bracken

2018 marks the centenary year of the French composer, Achille-Claude Debussy passing. To honour this occasion, one of the best-loved piano pieces, Clair De Lune (light of the moon or moonlight), will be performed Under the Moon by Liverpool born pianist, William Bracken.
William became a student at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music studying piano with Jonathan Middleton, for which he received a scholarship from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. William has played to internationally regarded pianists such as Gabrielle Baldocci, David Malusa, Simon Trpceski, Peter Donohoe and Joanna Macgregorans performed concertos by Beethoven, Prokofiev, Gershwin and Tchaikovsky.
Inspired by Clare Debussy, the performance will include his other best-known compositions, all performed Under the Moon.
